This situation was made possible thanks to Luxbox’s sale of French distribution rights to production and distribution company Capricci.
in diverseLouis Descombe, Capricci’s head of distribution, expressed his pride in adding Oliveira’s films to the company’s catalogue: “We had long hoped to be able to breathe new life into the unique, poignant and fresh work of the Portuguese director.” Luxbox founder, Fiorella Moretti, highlighted the fact that Oliveira’s films are returning to cinemas “This would not have been possible without the work of the Portuguese Cinematheque, which has already been restored Val Ibrahimwhich will continue to digitize and restore the remaining films in 2024, including Oliveira’s first film, Aneke Bobo“.
Unique and modern work
Val Ibrahim (1993), which screened at a special screening at Filmmakers’ Fortnight last May (and gave the group its beautiful poster), is supposed to be the first film to be released in French cinemas, in the spring of 2024. The return of this work to cinemas will allow us to appreciate the genius of the Portuguese director, who died in 2015 at the age of 106.
