6 Things You Should Never Leave in Your Car in Extreme Heat

The interior of a car can become very dangerous during periods of extreme heat, but not just for small children and animals: some everyday objects can become harmful, catch fire or even explode when the mercury rises.

Here's what you should never leave in your car, according to an ABC News compilation.

1- Transparent water bottle

Clear water bottles filled with clear liquids can cause fires if exposed to direct sunlight, David Richardson of the Midwest City, Oklahoma, Fire Department told US media on Saturday.

In fact, some of these bottles may act as a magnifying glass by redirecting light toward a single point that can become very hot, and even catch fire if the material the beam falls on is particularly flammable, such as an old receipt or a take-away box of food.

2- Drink in a plastic bottle

You should never consume any liquid that has been heated inside a plastic bottle left in a car, according to toxicologist and emergency physician Stephanie Widmer.

In fact, due to the chemical composition of the plastic bottle and its manufacturing process, exposure to heat can release toxins that can contaminate the liquid in the bottle and pose health risks, according to ABC News.

3- Electric evaporator

Electric vaporizer, battery-operated toy, electric scooter: Do not leave anything containing a lithium battery inside the passenger compartment, as it can explode if a beam of sunlight melts the plastic protection around the pile for display.

4- Soft drink cans

In the same context, to avoid an unintended explosion, it is best to avoid leaving canned soft drinks inside the car to prevent the internal heat from causing them to explode.

The same story goes for aerosol products, like sunscreen spray, or even lighters, according to ABC News.

5- Medications

The American media also insisted on not leaving products that may expire quickly due to heat, such as medicines or sunscreen.

Similarly, caution is advised when consuming alcoholic beverages, such as beer and wine, which can change their taste after too long in the heat. Sparkling wine and beer are also at risk of exploding if temperatures rise too high.

6- Glasses or sunglasses

Finally, avoid leaving glasses or sunglasses in the passenger compartment, even if they are used while driving, as there is a risk of them melting and becoming distorted, according to ABC News.
