The 2023 Women's World Cup kicked off on Thursday, July 20, with Portugal and the Netherlands playing in the first round on July 23, and Vietnam on July 27.
Other exciting matches include Portugal vs USA on Tuesday, August 1 at 3:00 AM (ET) at Eden Park, Auckland, New Zealand.
This is a particularly important moment for Portugal, as it marks their first appearance in the Women's World Cup. They missed out on qualifying for the 2019 Women's World Cup in France, but earned their place in the group stage this time around by beating Cameroon Women 2-1 in the final of the continental qualifiers in February.
The Portuguese national team is led by a coach Francisco Neto, Who was instrumental in guiding Portugal to major competitions. The main players to keep an eye on are Jessica Silva, Dolores Silva, Kika Nazareth.
The United States is currently ranked number one in the world according to the latest FIFA rankings, and is a dominant force in women's soccer, having won four titles overall, the most of any country. Their wins include the 2015 event in Canada and the 2019 championship in France.
Other top contenders include No. 2 seed Germany, which won back-to-back World Cups in 2003 and 2007, as well as No. 3 seed Sweden, which knocked out the United States in the 2016 Olympics quarterfinals. Additionally, Canada, the No. Seventh place, which won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, performed well.
The tournament, jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, features a total of 32 teams, including eight first-time entrants: Portugal, Haiti, Panama, Philippines, Republic of Ireland, Morocco, Vietnam and Zambia. Throughout the competition, there will be 64 matches. The 32 teams were divided into eight groups of four teams each.
