Portugal, the European champion, settled for a draw with Serbia (2-2) in the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup.
In Belgrade, Jota put the Portuguese squad on the right track by scoring two goals. The Liverpool striker scored two goals with a header, first from Silva's cross at the beginning of the match (11), then from a pass from Soares (36).
Mitrovic also reduced the score with a header at the beginning of the second half (46), scoring his 39th goal, which is a record in the history of the Serbian national team. Then Kostic equalized from a counterattack (minute 60).
Ronaldo leaves the field before the end
The end of the match was bitter for the Portuguese. Ronaldo, who had been very conservative until then, scored a wonderful shot in stoppage time, and the ball appeared to cross the goal line, but neither the referee nor the assistant referee awarded the goal. Disappointed, Ronaldo left the field while there were still a few seconds to play.
In other matches, they noted the draw between Belgium and the Czech Republic (1-1), Turkey's victory in Norway (3-0), and Croatia's victory over Cyprus (1-0).
