Interview with the Portuguese Minister of Education on the evolving dimensions of the right to education

Transformation is not a goal in itself. We must develop in light of the challenges that appear and continue. It goes without saying that basic access to education is not yet guaranteed in many countries and regions of the world, girls have been left behind, and the literacy rate is not yet sufficient. The pandemic has exacerbated this situation. Some of these difficulties are very old and require ongoing investment.

The rapid progress in technology in general and artificial intelligence in particular represents another major challenge. Technologies are part of our daily lives, but successfully establishing a healthy relationship with them is one of the main goals of education systems. This requires integrating technology with intention in mind and developing skills that have never been more important, such as the ability to navigate the deluge of information and think critically and creatively. What makes a human being unique – i.e. arts, literature, the ability to amaze and amaze, sports and their all-encompassing nature – requires achieving the right balance in designing education programmes, so that they promote human development and cultural progress and prepare… For the future.
