The world speed record, set by a battery-powered remote-controlled drone, has been broken by a South African YouTuber. The machine was controlled at an average speed of 480.23 km/h over a distance of 100 metres, and has just entered the Guinness Book of World Records.
The feat was accomplished in Worcester, in the Western Cape Province, South Africa, on April 21. In addition to its record, the drone was recorded at a top speed of 510 km/h and a lightning-fast acceleration from 0 to 300 km/h in just two seconds.
What makes it all the more impressive is that this feat is the work of two amateurs, in this case South African YouTuber Luke Bell and his father Mike. The drone, dubbed Peregreen 2, was mainly made up of 3D printed parts and was developed in the family garage.
This record comes after another show of strength, signed by Red Bull in partnership with the Dutch company Drone Gods, which specializes in producing aerial videos. As a prelude to the Formula 1 season, Red Bull has launched a drone capable of following one of its cars as it is launched for a quick lap around the Silverstone circuit in England. Presented at the time as the world's fastest recreational drone, it achieved the feat of reaching a top speed of 350 km/h. But that has already become a thing of the past.
