(KYIV) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will participate in the upcoming G7 summit in Italy scheduled for June, either online or in person, his spokesman said Monday.
Sergei Nikiforov told Ukrainian TV: “I cannot confirm or deny that the president will actually participate in the G7 summit, but in any case, whether online or in person, there is no doubt that he will be present.”
One of the main points on the agenda of the summit, which will be held in southern Italy from June 13-15, will focus on ways to use interests in frozen Russian assets to provide Ukraine with new aid.
Zelensky has increased his travels in recent days to rally support ahead of the summit on Ukraine that was organized on June 15-16 in Switzerland, to which Russia was not invited.
He visited several European capitals, in addition to Singapore and the Philippines.
Killed in Kharkiv region
One person was killed and two wounded in a Russian missile attack on the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine, where Russian forces launched an attack in early May, the region's governor announced on Monday.
This raid, around midnight, targeted the village of Slobojanskiy, located southeast of the regional capital, and caused damage to homes. “One man was killed and another man and a woman were injured,” Oleg Senegubov said on Telegram.
Russian forces target the Kharkiv region on an almost daily basis, launching a ground attack in this sector on May 10, and seizing several sites.
Ukraine, which sent valuable reinforcements to the region, confirmed at the end of May that this Russian attack had “stopped.” The fighting is currently taking place mainly in the east.
The United States gave Ukraine the green light last week to use American weapons, under certain conditions, to strike Russian territory, in particular with the aim of repelling the attack on the Kharkiv region.
