Portugal qualified for the Euro 2024 qualifiers (Group Ten), by defeating Liechtenstein 4-0 with goals from Joao Cancelo (eighth), Bernardo Silva (47th), and Cristiano Ronaldo (51st penalty kicks, 63rd).
Alongside Roberto Martinez, Ronaldo now holds the world record for the number of matches with the national team (197), and the previous record was held by Kuwaiti Badr Al-Mutawa.
It all started well for the Seleção, as Cancelo scored his eighth goal in 42 matches (8, 1-0) from a corner kick saved by Benjamin Büchel. Despite having 70% possession, the Lusitanians did not create any openings against their opponents, who were arranged in a 6-3-1 formation, and were unable to make two passes without losing the ball. Bushell blocked two shots from Joao Felix (19) and Baleña (38), but Ronaldo missed with his head (34) and Silva did not capitalize on a ball fired by the opponent's goalkeeper (27).
At the start of the second half, the Portuguese doubled the lead through Silva (47, 2-0) and they distributed the ball faster. From a penalty kick, Ronaldo scored his first goal of his Liechtenstein career (51st, 3-0) before raising the Seleção's tally of goals to 120 with a cannon shot (63rd, 4-0).
At the Bileno Polje Stadium in Zenica, Rade Krunic (14th and 40th) and Ammar Dedic (63rd) allowed Bosnia to win 3-0 over Iceland. Among the Bosnians, Eubenwa Smail Prevljak came off in the 67th minute and Standardman Gojko Chemirot entered the match (82nd minute). Holder with Scandinavia, the Lovanist John Dagur Thorsteinsson (67) was replaced.
Slovakia, with Jenko's Patryk Hrosovski on the bench, shared the match 0-0 against Luxembourg's Anthony Morris (Saint-Geloise Union).
