Last April, France Assos Santé exercised its right to alert the High Health Authority, regarding the treatment of fluoroquinolone victims.
Fluoroquinolones are antibiotics known to be highly toxic to human health (disabling musculoskeletal disorders, peripheral neuropathies, neuropsychiatric disorders, hearing disorders, heart problems, etc.).
The diseases caused by the use of fluoroquinolones are often misunderstood by the medical profession, or even denied by a large number of doctors who do not have a consistent protocol for the care of people who suffer from them. On April 5, we asked the High Council of Human Medicine to launch an in-depth review so that this problem of toxicity is taken into account, in proportion to the harm caused to people whose health and daily life have deteriorated unbearably.
On July 19, the High Health Authority announced Follow up on our request. HAS therefore includes in its work programme the development and dissemination of information intended for healthcare professionals who are likely to encounter patients with potential complications associated with fluoroquinolones. This document aims to raise awareness among professionals of the importance of identifying these complications, encourage them to report them through the pharmacovigilance system and identify actions to be taken in the management of patients experiencing adverse effects related to the intake of fluoroquinolones.
We consider that the seriousness of the situation fully justifies its inclusion in the work programme as of next year. The Association for Assistance and Information on the Harmful Effects of Fluoroquinolones and the France Assos Santé Foundation will participate in this work.
