Tropical Storm Debbie | Heavy Rain Expected in Coming Days in Ontario and Quebec

Tropical Storm Remnants Debbiewhich has been moving along the U.S. East Coast for about ten days, and a low pressure system coming from the west could bring heavy rain to Ontario and southern Quebec for the rest of the week.

Tropical Storm DebbieEnvironment Canada warned in a special weather bulletin issued Wednesday that heavy rains, which have caused extensive damage on the U.S. East Coast for days, could bring heavy rains as far as Ontario and southern Quebec for the rest of the week.

The remnants of the storm, along with a low pressure system from the west, will likely bring heavy rain to eastern Ontario from Thursday evening into Friday. Rainfall amounts could exceed 50 mm.

Heavy rain (50 to 100 mm over 24 hours) is also expected in southern Quebec between Friday and Saturday. “It could start early Friday morning in Montreal, then move towards Quebec and Rimouski and reach Gaspé in the late afternoon,” confirms Environment Canada meteorologist Nicholas Elder.

Heavy rain is expected Friday evening and overnight from Friday into Saturday. Some areas could receive more than 100mm of rain.

“complex” scenario

However, Nicholas Elder warns that “the remnants of the tropical storm will interact with the low coming in from the prairies, making rainfall forecasts more complex.” So there is still uncertainty about the maximum amounts planned, and which sectors will be most severely affected.

Therefore, the expected rainfall amounts may change in the coming hours, and rain warnings may be issued as confidence in the forecast increases.

Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and water build-up on roads. Flooding is also possible in low-lying areas.

In New York, authorities told basement apartment dwellers to prepare to leave their homes as heavy rains were forecast. In less than four hours, up to 15 centimeters of rain fell in parts of New Jersey.

However, Nicholas Elder noted that such measures are not being considered “at this time” for Quebec.
