At the heart of the controversy, American singer Chappelle Rowan explains her vote for Harris

After soaring to the top of the charts this summer, American singer Chappelle Rowan has found herself at the center of controversy over her criticism of the government, so much so that she was forced to clarify on Wednesday that she will still vote for Vice President Kamala Harris over Donald Trump.

It all started last week with an interview with The Guardian, a British daily, in which the 26-year-old artist explained that he has “a lot of problems with the current government” headed by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and does not want to publicly support the candidate.

“There are problems on both sides,” she adds. “I encourage people to use their critical thinking.”

The controversy, which accused her of playing into Republican hands, escalated to the point where she posted a TikTok video on Tuesday to clarify that her tendency to “question authority and leaders” did not mean she would vote for Donald Trump.

Visibly upset by the comments she has received, she added in another video on Wednesday that she would vote for Kamala Harris without her full support and without being happy with the choice presented to her, refusing to put her name to a cause in which she has “no confidence.”

“Obviously one option is better than the other, but I hope… you won't be happy with it,” she added, calling on her fans to vote, participate and question their leaders.

She adds that she despises Donald Trump, but is also disappointed by the Democratic Party's stance on gays, Palestinians, and “all marginalized communities around the world.”

Publicly, she already declined an invitation earlier this year to perform at a White House Pride Month event to challenge American support for Israel in its war in Gaza.

Kamala Harris' campaign team has repeatedly covered Chappelle Rowan songs to accompany the candidate's social media videos.
