Strengthening the status of women in science

The College of Science presents a new series of intermediate conferences that aim to enhance the status of women in science and shed light on the path of women who have distinguished themselves in various scientific fields.

The first conference, which was held on September 12, welcomed Donna Strickland, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2018 and professor at the University of Waterloo. The researcher talked about her scientific journey and her contributions in the field of lasers. Moderation was presented by Brittany Pelletier-Villeneuve, MSc candidate in Chemistry, and Arunima Sandeep, PhD candidate in Biochemistry.

Alumna Marie-Claude Aquin (MSc. Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, 2002), who now works at Transport Canada, will participate in the second conference, on October 16. Maxine Cloutier-Gervais, MSc candidate in atmospheric sciences and 2024 Women in Science Fund grantee, will host the event.

On December 4, another alumna, Diane Séguin (MA in Biology, 1993), Director General of Biology/DNA at the Laboratory of Judicial Sciences and Legal Medicine of Quebec, will be the guest speaker. Diane Seguin, winner of the 2024 Mosaique Prize, will share her 25 years of experience in forensic biology. The conference will be moderated by Shirin Nawaito, postdoctoral fellow and lecturer in biology.
