A brief power outage plunged the entire city of New York into darkness Thursday evening as smoke billowed from a power station in Brooklyn.
Shortly before midnight, photos shared on social media and published by the New York Post showed smoke billowing from what appeared to be a Con Edison substation on Vinegar Hill.
New York’s electricity provider did not immediately respond to the outage, while the New York Fire Department reported several calls reporting power outages and elevator closures.
“We are currently investigating this issue and appreciate your patience as we review this matter,” Con Edison later posted on X (formerly Twitter), as if in response to customer concerns.
The Long Island Rail Transit System reported that elevators and escalators at Central Station stopped working after a “power issue from Con Edison.”
Police officers responded to the Con Ed substation on Gold Street, where a transformer explosion caused power surges and blackouts across New York City, according to the New York tabloid.
