“I especially want to mention the soldiers who are returning Ukraine’s territory, step by step, in the Bakhmut sector,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his daily video message.

“Klychchievka: Well done! He added, explaining the units that participated in the operation.

Oleksandr Syrsky, commander of the Ukrainian Ground Army, echoed these words on social networks: “Klychchevka has been cleared of Russians.”

Russian forces captured this city, which had a population of a few hundred before the Russian invasion, in January.

The announcement comes after the Ukrainian Armed Forces announced on Friday that they had regained control of another district, Andreivka, south of Bakhmut. The Russian military said on Sunday that was not the case.

Ukraine launched a counter-offensive in June to reclaim territory occupied by Russia after obtaining Western weapons and training new brigades.

Bakhmut, which had a population of 70,000 people before Russia’s invasion in February 2022, was captured by Russian forces last May after one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the war.

However, almost immediately, Ukrainian forces began to reclaim ground on the north and south sides of this city.
