Extended until the end of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (postponed until 2024) in Ivory Coast, Jose Peseiro is not sure of maintaining his position outside the continental tournament. On a local channel, Mohamed Sanus, General Secretary of the National Football Federation, spoke about the future of the Nigerian coach.

At the top of the Nigerian selection list since May 2022, Jose Peseiro is in the hot seat. Despite qualifying for the Super Eagles of the 2023 African Cup of Nations, with a mixed record (4 wins and 5 losses in 9 matches), the Portuguese technician is no longer in agreement with the national team fans who are calling for his departure. On the local channel PromptNews, Mohamed Sanus, General Secretary of the National Football Federation, spoke about the future of the 63-year-old coach.

“Frankly, the federation has not held any meeting with Peseiro regarding his contract or its extension. At the moment, he has a contract that runs until the Africa Cup of Nations. We will assess his performance after the tournament before entering into further discussions with him. Our current goal is to prepare the team for a great performance in Ivory Coastsaid the Nigerian leader.

Despite the criticism directed at him, the Portuguese is expected to remain in charge of the Super Eagles at least until the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. He will strive to top their performance in the last edition, as the Nigerian forces were eliminated in the round of 16 against Tunisia (0-1).

Barely two weeks ago, the Nigerian Federation was considering putting the future of the Portuguese coach to a referendum! It was an unorthodox way of deciding whether he should continue to coach the national team after his contract expired on 30 June. But thanks to qualification to the 2023 African Cup of Nations, Peseiro was granted an extension to the prestigious continental tournament, without the need for a referendum.

Super Eagles fans were supposed to be charged for their votes, generating revenue to replenish the federation’s accounts and pay Peseiro’s €70,000 monthly salary. However, with the recent statements of the General Secretary of the National Football Association, it seems that this far-fetched idea has been shelved. Perhaps he will appear again at the beginning of next year …
