The suburbs of Oraliel are taking on color as the 2023 school year begins. A monumental work has recently been added to the urban decor, and is simply titled Welcome to the station. that it New York artist JonOneWorld famous and original. His specialty: graffiti, which he transferred onto ceramics in Lille Flanders station.
Ceramics from an old Portuguese workshop
This ceramic is called azulejos due to its Portuguese origin. Lille explains in more detail: “JonOne paints his abstract works directly, rich in color as the material vibrates through the brushstroke. This monumental work is a wonderful tribute to Lille, a region touched by the warmth of its people.”
The work is installed permanently. The contrast between craftsmanship – JonOne is collaborating with Portuguese company Viuva Lamego, the oldest azulejo company still in operation – and street art is sure to attract travelers at the station.
The American artist, who lives in Paris, is considered a true pioneer in his field: he exhibited his creations at… Tokyo, Monaco, Paris, Geneva, New York, Hong Kong and even Brussels. It is therefore fortunate that we have an indelible trace of his talent in our capital, Flanders.
