Artur Jorge, former Paris Saint-Germain coach and 1994 French champion, has died

Portuguese Artur Jorge died on Thursday. It was the family of the former Matra-Racing and Paris-SG coach that made the announcement via a press release: “It is with great sadness that the family of Artur Jorge Braga de Melo Teixeira announces his death this morning in Lisbon, after a long illness. He died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.”

The former striker of Porto, Benfica and Belenenses, Artur Jorge, who celebrated his 78th birthday on February 13, distinguished himself during a long coaching career, including two spells with Paris Saint-Germain (1991-1994 and then 1998-99), but also Porto (1984- 1987 then 1989-1991), Matra Racing (1987-1989), Benfica (1994-1995), Portuguese national team (1996-1997), US Créteil (2006-07). His coaching career also saw him enjoy a double experience in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between 1999 and 2001 with Al-Nasr and then Al-Hilal, but also in Russia (2003-2004) and at the head of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon (2004-2006).

Artur Jorge won the 1987 European Champions Cup with Porto, thanks to a stunning back-heel strike from Rabah Madjer (2-1 vs. Bayern Munich). The Portuguese technician also won the French Cup in 1993 and the championship in 1994 on the bench for Paris Saint-Germain. His last mission? At the helm of the Mouloudia Algiers in 2014-2015.
