A stroller carrying twins fell onto a railway line in Australia on Sunday, shortly before a train was due to arrive, killing one of the little girls and their father who tried to rescue them.
One of the two-year-old twins had a “lucky” escape by falling between the tracks when the pram came off the platform at Carlton Station in Sydney's south, police said.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Paul Dunstan said his sister was killed instantly, as was their father who rushed to help them.
The young survivor “largely survived” the convoy, which passed her on its way to central Sydney in the early afternoon, he added.
The police officer continued that when exiting the elevator onto the station platform, the parents had “taken their hands off the stroller very briefly.”
“Was it a gust of wind? We're not sure, but it looks like the stroller immediately started rolling towards the railroad tracks.”
The train slowed down as it approached, but it was not supposed to stop at this station.
The 40-year-old father tried to save his daughters and “lost his life, but it was an incredibly brave and heroic act,” Dunstan added.
“In shock, the 39-year-old mother and her surviving daughter were taken to hospital, where they are receiving support from loved ones in the local Indian community,” he added.
“I hope in time they will find some comfort in knowing that their father died as a result of an extraordinary act of bravery,” said NSW Premier Chris Maine.
