Sporting Portugal was crowned champion of Portugal, after defeating Lisbon's other major team, Benfica, at Famalicao Stadium (2-0), on Sunday evening, in the 32nd round.
In fact, two days before the end, Sporting, winner at home against Portimonense (3-0) on Saturday and the best attack in the tournament with 92 goals, leads Benfica by eight points and is therefore no longer unbeatable.
Sporting, for which this is the 20th title in its history, succeeds its great rival Lisbon, which has won the title 38 times, eight times behind Porto, which currently occupies third place, 18 points behind the champion.
The new champion, whose last national title dates back to 2021 after an 18-year drought, was eliminated this season in the round of 16 of the European League by Atalanta Bergamo. He will play in the next Champions League.
Their Swedish striker Viktor Geukeris, 25, who arrived from Coventry last summer, tops the scoring charts with 27 goals.
Sporting Portugal, which has lost just two league games this season, has been coached since 2020 by Ruben Amorim, a 39-year-old former international and Benfica player. Thus, he won his second title at the helm of Sporting after 2021.
His team is still capable of achieving the double, as it will face Porto in the National Cup final on May 26.
