Nazaré (Portugal) and the legendary Praia do Norte. Many try to surf the XXL waves that break there and among them are many of the big names in surfing.
French Justin Dupont is one of those extreme riders. Originally from Lacanau, in the Gironde, the surfer moved to Nazaré in 2016, before the start of competitions organized by the World Surfing Association. Oftentimes the favorite during competitions, the Frenchie was honored last October, during the 2021 Big Wave Awards. She took first place in three of the four categories, ‘Ride of the Year’, ‘Performance of the Year’ and “Biggest Drag Wave.” She regularly approaches the neck and neck with Maya Gabeira, in search of a new record.
Shock Duo Lenny – Xianka
The Brazilian is the current world record holder for the highest wave ridden among women (22.4 metres). She regularly collaborates with the German Sebastian Staudtner. Michelle des Bouillons is also one of those who jump into Portuguese water monsters.
Among the men, superstar surfers Hawaiian Kai Lenny and Brazilian Lucas Chianca are regulars in the Nazaré area. The two surfers often mate, work as a team and win championships.
Pedro Scobe is also one of those who amazes the spectators on the cliff. The Brazilian markedly distinguished in the last competition with a big hit. Rodrigo Coxa complements the small group of committed Brazilians.
New kid in the band
Another Frenchman is also trying to find his place in Nazareth. This is Pierre Roulette. The surfer regularly collaborates with Justin Dupont on jet skis. Last January, he had a major fall during a session in Praia do Norte, which left him frightened and some injuries.

The new kid on the spot is Tony Laureano. At just 19, the young Portuguese has just won his first Big Wave competition in Spain. For some time, he collaborated with Justin Dupont and companion Fred David. He is now responsible for dragging the French woman, while Fred David ensures her safety on the second water bike.
