Agnico Eagle continues its green efforts, by installing a central barrier in the main pit of the Canadian Malartic complex, where mining will cease in 2023.
The Barnat Pit is still in operation, just like the Odyssey.
The goal is to reduce its environmental footprint, as it ensures the safe management of its surplus, rather than cutting down trees and depositing everything elsewhere, said Serge Bliss, vice president of Agnico Eagle's Canadian Malartic complex.
Agnico Eagle confirms that the berm is safe, considering that downtown Malartic is only a few meters away.
The mining company remains cautious about its operation to ensure safety.
This initiative is part of the mining's environmental quest, a value they have preached since the inception of the gold complex; ranging from water recycling to electrifying their equipment.
Agnico Eagle is in contact with the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources regarding future site restoration, in order to inherit land that meets current standards.
