The visiting student became the guardian of the village
Maria Alice Raymond was elected on Sunday. The reaction of this Swiss-Portuguese whose first visit to the village was only a language sojourn.
Who could have imagined, some forty years ago, that a young Portuguese student, who had come to master the French language at Chardonne, would one day become her first unionist? Certainly not she. At fifty-eight years of age, Maria Alice Raymond was entrusted with the chair that Fabrice Neraud had left vacant since last May. Swiss-Portuguese candidate for Chardonnay without a party (CSP) He beat his opponent PLR Yves Genton By a vote of 530 to 320. A phone call was made to this mother of two, who has been settled for ten years in this village of 3,200 in the Riviera Heights.
Maria Alice Raymond, how did you celebrate your victory?
Quite simply with an aperitif, as it should be in Chardonnay (He laughs). I wasn’t prepared anything because I didn’t know what to expect. It was a surprise. I will not hide from you that I am very honored to be the first trustee in the history of the municipality.
How do you explain this result?
I am a person who loves to gather. When I listen to people, it is non-judgmental. Perhaps it was this kind of benevolence that seduced. My experience was also certainly important, as I was a member of the municipal council for five years before I was elected to the municipality in 2021. After that, we campaigned a lot on the ground.
Foreign-born union-elected woman: Is your profile a break for Chardonne?
I won’t say that. Rather than change, it is an evolution in continuity.
What aspects will you like and dislike about this new job?
I particularly welcome to Unite a team and be more attentive to people. As for arrests, I will bear additional responsibilities, of which I am aware. But I have no particular fear. I’m not alone, we’re a good team!
What are the challenges facing your village?
First, the pre-curricular and extracurricular reception structures. There are many children on the waiting list. The four municipalities of the Cercle de Corsier are actively working on solutions. Another challenge will be to continue strengthening the economic fabric of the municipality, made up mainly of winegrowers, farmers and merchants. Not to mention the Great Hall renovation project that was supposed to be investigated soon. We hope to start work in 2024.
