On Tuesday, February 20 at 7 p.m., the Thetford Public Library Network presents the Gaetan Laflamme Conference entitled “Celestial Stones, Meteorites, Meteors, and Asteroids.”
Skystones or meteorites are fragments of rock, metal, or other material from space that pass through the Earth's atmosphere and reach the Earth's surface. These foreign fragments can vary in size, from small dust particles to large pieces.
When a celestial body, such as an asteroid, enters the Earth's atmosphere and reaches the Earth's surface, it can cause a meteorite impact. This impact can cause serious consequences depending on the size and speed of the impacting object. We find traces of these impacts on the Moon, on planets, and on Earth, including several impacts in Quebec.
In this conference, Gaetan Laflamme will explain the origin of meteorites and meteors, and how to find celestial stones, that is, meteorites. These provide valuable information about the composition of celestial bodies and can provide clues about the history and evolution of our solar system. Many photographs of the meteorite collection will also be on display at the Minero Museum.
A few words about the speaker
Gaetan Laflamme is an amateur astronomer, and a member of the Federation of Amateur Astronomers of Quebec (FAAQ) and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (SRAC/RASC). He is collaborating with researchers at Western University in Ontario by photographing meteors in order to calculate the precise orbits of this dust in space or predict the potential impact point of meteors that may end up on Earth.
Users of the Thetford Public Library network can obtain tickets by going to the Circulation Desk at the Cégep Library. Please note that a limit of two tickets per member has been set.
