'Disturbing hallucinations': 'Mushroom' gum sends people to hospital in Australia

The Australian and New Zealand Health Authority warned the public on Thursday about Uncle Frog brand “mushroom” gum, after at least five hospital admissions were recorded after consuming it.

“Disturbing hallucinations,” “drowsiness or loss of consciousness,” “convulsive activity and involuntary movements such as spasms of the arms and legs” as well as “eye movements” are among the disturbances observed by health facilities affiliated with the authorities.

“Investigations are ongoing to determine what these products contain. We strongly recommend that you do not consume them,” said Darren Roberts, medical director of the NSW Poisons Information Centre.

The state health directorate said in a statement issued today, Wednesday, that at least five people were taken to hospital after eating this type of gum in the state located in southeastern Australia.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), which is responsible for developing food standards for Australia and New Zealand, said the company, whose website was no longer accessible on Thursday, had recalled the products.

Uncle Frog's mushroom gummies came in two versions: one said to help develop “memory and focus” and the other said to provide “energy and strength.”

The packages promised to “elevate your day” and said the gummies were “filled with the finest cannabis on earth.”

One of the victims of the product in Perth, Laura Jones, said she had to be admitted to hospital after suffering an irregular heartbeat. “My heart rate went up to 160 beats per minute,” she said.

“It was a bit strange because it was $50 Australian dollars for eight sweets, so it was quite expensive,” she told NPR.
