A nine-year-old boy was killed at close range during a family trip to the Dominican Republic, in what investigators believe was a botched robbery.
Joser Luis Velez and his family, originally from New York, arrived in Santiago on Wednesday and were traveling in a rental car when they were followed by a group of six men, Dominican police said. Geuser traveled to the southern country to take advantage of the spring break.
According to the latest data, these six men had a plan to stop and steal the car. At the moment, it is known that the little boy, his father, and at least one other person were in the vehicle, FOX News reports.
When the car stopped running, one of the robbers opened fire, hitting the boy in the head.
Police detained six of the men as of April 21.
Luis Abinader, President of the Dominican Republic, was able to confirm five of the arrests on his Twitter account. He says his heart goes out to the victim’s family.
