Don't buy a Mac just yet

This time it's certain: Apple will introduce several new Macs equipped with M4 chips on Wednesday, October 30 during a special event. It looks much better than current models.

If you're planning to get a new Mac now, it's best to postpone your purchase for a few days. In fact, as several converging rumors have suggested for several weeks, Apple should update its lineup of computers at the end of October with several new models. The main novelty: the arrival of the M4 chip in different versions. As a reminder, this processor, more powerful than the M3 processor, was first introduced last May on the iPad Pro, the brand's very high-end tablet. Due to its rather exceptional performance, it has been eagerly awaited on Apple computers that have been deprived of it so far, the most powerful of which is equipped with “only” the “big arm” version of the M3, the M3 Max.

A few weeks after showing off the iPhone 16 (see our article), Apple should unveil its new Macs during a special event – a Keyword In Apple's language – which will be held at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, with a live video broadcast over the Internet, as is now customary. If the rumors of a return to school on time were to circulate, it was Mark Gurman, the famous Bloomberg journalist who was always well-informed about Apple's projects – and who some mischievous minds called him – who revealed the secret in a published letter. on X. The big conference will be held on October 30, at 10 a.m. California time. An unmissable event for brand fans, because the ads must live up to expectations. In the absence of an official explanation, Gorman remains cautious, however, raising the possibility of an event on Tuesday the 29th and a product engagement on the 30th, a likely hypothesis, much as Apple is used to giving his keynotes on Tuesday.

In fact, according to experts' forecasts, Apple should unveil new products in several ranges: laptops, with new MacBook Pros, but also desktops, with new versions of iMac, all-in-one built-in displays, and Mac. Mini, the famous miniature model. The common point is the M4 chip, perhaps in three versions (Simple, Pro and Max) and, as a result, a significant increase in performance compared to the M3.

New Mac M4: At least 16GB of RAM

For this occasion, Apple should also increase the core RAM. Instead of the 8 GB that is offered as standard with cheaper configurations – an amount that is too little today and too low for the future, especially with the arrival of Apple Intelligence, the internal artificial intelligence that risks showing itself greedy for hardware resources – Apple should finally equip all its models with With a capacity of at least 16 GB. It's time!

Moreover, the brand should completely review the design of the Mac mini, which has not changed for a long time and which is starting to become a juggernaut next to the ultra-compact PCs offered by manufacturers such as Geekom, Beelink or Minisforum. Rumors point to a small box the size of an Apple TV, with modern connectivity.

In all, Gorman believes Apple will introduce new products in three ranges: a 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max, a 24-inch iMac with the M4 and a Mac mini with the M4 and M4 Pro. The Mac Studio, the ultra-high-end model for creators, will no longer exist, even if many expected an evolution with the supercharged M4 (M4 Ultra?).

The big unknown remains prices. Apple isn't used to underselling its products, and Macs are no exception to that rule. Except that with Mac sales down since the start of the year, and new models awaiting release, we can hope the brand will cool off its financial excitement a bit. Maybe not on the MacBook Pros, which should remain expensive laptops, but perhaps on the iMac M4 and on the Mac mini M4, which could become bestsellers if they meet user expectations. Remember, the current Mac mini, with the simple M2 chip, is the brand's cheapest PC at €699 – and less during promotions. One thing is for sure: now is not the time to buy a Mac! It is better to wait for official announcements in a few days. And rush to the old models that will be sold during Black Friday.
