“I met with Dwayne this afternoon and told him that we will release him,” Washington coach Ron Rivera said in a statement.
“I told him that I think it would be beneficial for both parties to go our separate ways. We want to thank Dwayne for his contributions in the past two seasons and wish him all the best in moving forward.”
Haskins was put on the bench during Washington’s loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
His demotion came after a tumultuous week that saw Haskins lose his role as one of Washington’s leaders and was fined an undisclosed sum for violating the Covid-19 team’s protocols.
Washington demoted and fined Haskins after learning the team of posts on social media showing the 23-year-old without a mask while attending his girlfriend’s birthday party.
Haskins was the team’s first draft round in 2019 and ranked 15th overall.
The former Ohio State University midfielder apologized to his team last week for the virus protocol measures, saying they were “immature and unacceptable”.
Speaking Monday on his Twitter account, Haskins said, according to ESPN and several other outlets, saying that he bears “full responsibility for not meeting NFL QB standards and will become a better man and player because of this experience.”
Washington will conclude the regular season this Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles with hopes that the play-offs are still alive.
