BELFAST – On Tuesday, April 2, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., the Friends of Sears Island and the Belfast Free Library will co-sponsor a Science Squad for Kids after-school program, themed around the upcoming April 8 eclipse. The event will take place in Belfast Free Library's Abbott Hall.
Videos and a story will be shared to help children learn the science of the eclipse, and then participants will be able to make a solar viewing box, which works like a pinhole camera, allowing for safe, indirect viewing with your back to the sun. Belfast Free Library will also provide free eclipse glasses to participants, with a maximum of one per person, or four per family.
This free program is for children ages 5 to 12 and accompanied by adults. Advance registration is required as space is limited. Register by emailing [email protected]. Registration is complete when you receive a confirmation email.
This event is part of Friends of Sears Island's “Science Squad,” an after-school place-based program that involves children as scientists, explorers, and stewards of their environment. The Science Troupe is sponsored by First National Bank.
On Monday, April 8, Eclipse Day, the library will also host a community eclipse viewing celebration from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m., where NASA videos will be shown, and refreshments and eclipse viewing glasses will be available at the Abbott Store. room. At around 3 p.m., people will gather on the library's south lawn to watch the eclipse together.
