– Cannes 2023: the European Solidarity Fund for Ukrainian Films unveils the first supported projects, presented by their producers on the CNC platform

This surreal moment of media solidarity was followed by the creation of a Solidarity Fund for Ukrainian Films (European Solidarity Fund for Ukrainian Films, ESFU) with an envelope of €1 million in exchange for cinema centers from 13 European countries. This amount, managed by the French CNC, is intended to support films of the Ukrainian initiative in co-production.
He chairs the eight-member committee Marianne slot (slot machine producer, who worked with Lars von Trier but also Ukrainian Sergei Loznitsa) selected eleven projects, of which six were signed by female directors and five by male directors. They were announced on May 21 at CNC Beach in Cannes, in the presence of a few Ukrainian producers, European co-producers and, on video, Ukrainian directors and documentaries. The maximum development aid – Upstream – is €25,000 for documentaries and €50,000 for fiction or animation. There is also a termination subsidy which can be up to €75,000.

The commission will meet again before the end of 2023 (the envelope still contains more than €500,000). Two new countries have joined the European Solidarity Fund for Ukrainian Films, Norway and the United Kingdom. The personalities in attendance also appealed to European goodwill to support Ukrainian producers as well, with advice, networking and why not at festivals to show these films once they are completed.
