Roman and Antoni Correia, both 24, are making their professional footballing debut in Portugal. Having left Castres several years ago, they now play in the second division.
In Portugal, the championship has resumed since the weekend of August 10 and 11. In the second division, in the Liga Pro, two defenders are facing a turning point in their young careers. The two Castres are 24-year-old twins, the Correa brothers. This summer, the players have experienced a change of scenery and will come face to face: Antony has just signed for Vizela and Roman for Marítimo, who aims to climb the table. The two brothers will therefore compete to bring their club into the elite of Portuguese football. “We have played against each other many times in our careers,” explains Antony. “He has won some games, I have won others… We call each other every day, we talk about everything, personal or professional… We have a little space sometimes, but nothing more!” His brother adds: “We are there for each other.”
He trained in Castres and then in Guimarães.
Trained at Castres Football Club. The twins studied at Jean Jaurès and then at Les Cedres, and left France at the age of 15. Heading to Portugal, where their father had a connection, to join the training center of Vitória Guimarães (their parents are from Vila Nova de Tazem). The paths of the brothers diverge: Antony joins several second division clubs, while Roman signs in 2021 for the great FC Porto, where he plays almost 70 matches with the reserve team. Without having the opportunity to play for the first team of Sérgio Conceição.
Despite everything, the defender has good memories of this three-year experience: “Everything went well at Porto. I played a lot of games with the reserves, trained a lot with the first team and dealt with great players, with whom I was able to progress and learn.” At the end of his contract for free, he signed for Marítimo where he hopes to “play as many games as possible and progress with the club”. “I discussed it with my family and my wife. I think it is the right path to follow.”
“Being a professional was my dream!”
For his part, Anthony remembers his youth in the south of the Tarn: they lived in La Bruguière, but “I was always in Castres, for football or with my friends”. He regularly returns to Castres, where his grandparents live. “During the season, our family comes to see us, and when we have a long rest, it is we who go to the Tarn. »
With more than a hundred matches played in the Portuguese D2, Antoni Correia is proud of his career: “Honestly, I am satisfied with my career. It has not always been easy, but the reward comes little by little. My dream was to be a professional, and in France, I did not have the opportunity to join a training center. »
