Upon his arrival this summer at Inter Milan, after a mixed spell at Bayern Munich, Yann Sommer had the difficult task of replacing Andre Onana’s departure in the Lombard cages. A successful mission for the Swiss goalkeeper, who has already made Manchester United’s new goalkeeper forgettable.
There were a lot of skeptics when it was announced that he was signing for Inter. The Swiss international (84 caps) initially proved him right. During his first match of pre-season, he shone when he conceded a goal due to a critical error, far from a dream debut.
But the tide is turning quickly for the 34-year-old. His first matches in Serie A were reassuring, and he seemed to adapt quickly to his new defensive teammates. He makes a number of brilliant saves which he knows the secret to, and he stood out noticeably from a free-kick against Empoli last week (see video below).
In seven league matches, Sommer has conceded just three goals, the best defensive record in the Big Five. Aided by commendable defence, Yan kept six clean sheets in his first nine matches.
The supporters won
In the Champions League, the goalkeeper had a great performance against Real Sociedad during the first day. Once again, on Tuesday evening, against Benfica, the Morges compatriot avoided opening the scoring thanks to a decisive reaction to a shot from Orsnes (13). Inter beat the Portuguese 1-0.
Nerazzurri supporters, like the Italian media, are happy with the performance of the number one. “Sumer conquered Inter and made Onana forget: his silent leadership pleases.” Interista. Eight months before the Euros, Yann Sommer appears to have established himself as a leader in the Milan dressing room.
