Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo, whose football career is “inextricably linked with the history” of Lisbon, announced the city’s Medal of Honor, Thursday, in a press release. The city’s mayor, Carlos Moedas, said in a statement that Ronaldo “has always defended, promoted and displayed the name of Lisbon all over the world.” He added, “The history of Cristiano Ronaldo, considered many times the best player in the world, is closely linked to the history of Lisbon.”
The beginning of his career in 2002
A five-time Ballon d’Or winner on the Portuguese island of Madeira, he landed on his own in Lisbon at the age of 12 where he trained at Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon, a team that also welcomed Luis Figo into its academy.
The 38-year-old striker, who currently plays for Saudi club Al-Nasr, started his professional career with the Lions in a match against Inter Milan on August 14, 2002.
