EasyJet strike in Portugal: Geneva is little affected at the moment
The strike of the cabin crew, demanding an increase in salaries, is the reason for the cancellation of 70% of flights from Portugal.
Having already gone on strike in April and May, Portuguese cabin crew offered Easyjet cover on Friday: 70% of flights from Portugal have been cancelled. The mobilization, which is supposed to last until Tuesday, could have an impact on flights to and from Geneva. However, at the moment, the Geneva-Porto connection is only canceled at 4.05pm. However, others may follow.
according to RTSHowever, the Portuguese government had established a minimum level of service, particularly in countries with a large Portuguese community. Switzerland is one of these, it shouldn’t be one of the most affected destinations. In Geneva, the Portuguese are already the second most represented foreign nationality after the French. So logically, Portugal is one of the most popular destinations during the summer period.
Company statement
The company says it is “doing everything it can to mitigate the impact on customers and inform them of the options available to them, including free rebooking or refunds.” It also recommends that travelers to and from Portugal “check their Flight Tracker status on their mobile app and website.”
Overall, Easyjet says it is “disappointed that the SNPVAC (National Civil Aviation Association) has planned a new strike despite its desire to continue constructive dialogue”. And while the union denounces pay inequality with affiliates in other countries, according to the company, “the average salary for its crew is already 124% of the national average salary in the sector, and SNPVAC’s latest request is for a 44% increase in gross pay, which is not an option.”
