Karim Benzema was named Player of the Year by UEFA. He received 523 votes, compared to 122 votes for Kevin De Bruyne and 118 votes for Thibaut Courtois. The Real Madrid striker spoke to the press about Cristiano Ronaldo’s legacy with Real Madrid. The author of a good season, the Frenchman thinks he cannot reach the numbers of the Portuguese.
Benzema is following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo. Since the Portuguese left Real Madrid, Karim Benzema has made an impression with his new role as Meringue captain. Benzema was named UEFA Player of the Year for the first time in his career, and he has yet to match Cristiano Ronaldo’s numbers.
“Cristiano helped me a lot, I had another role with him and when he left I knew I could take a step forward by scoring goals, but I still play football. What has changed since then is my goal score, but I still play the way I think we should. The numbers mean that I am not far from the legends of Real Madrid, and that gives me confidence, although I know that it is impossible to match Cristiano’s numbers. I do everything on the field to help the team win. The numbers are not the most important.”
