A man suspected of attempting to burgle an apartment in Rome, Italy, was arrested while reading a book on Greek mythology in the middle of his work on Aug. 20.
The man, Daniele Liquori, 38, allegedly entered the apartment in the Italian capital via the balcony, but was distracted by a book aboutIliad Italian media reported that the statue of Homer, which was placed on a bedside table, Republic.
The 71-year-old owner then woke up and confronted the thief. The latter allegedly then tried to flee the way he arrived, but to no avail since he was eventually caught.
The suspect later told police he climbed the building to visit an acquaintance. Authorities found a bag containing what appeared to be stolen clothing on him.
According to the suspect, the clothes were intended to be distributed to the homeless. He later changed his version of events.
“I had to meet someone who lives in this building, and while waiting, I took advantage of the apartment balcony to enjoy the view. Unfortunately, I slipped and fell on the first floor balcony. For a moment I thought I found myself in a “bed and breakfast”, where I saw a book. As I was leafing through it, it captivated me. It was very nice. However, I would like to point out that I did not steal anything.
He was acquitted on the grounds of “importance of truth”.
After seeing the news in the press, the author of the book said, To everyone – The whole Iliad is appetizing. (The Gods at the Sixth Hour – The Iliad at Appetizing Time), Giovanni Nucci, claimed that he wanted to send a copy to the thief so that he could finish reading it.
“Humans are unpredictable, so they can break into a house to steal, and end up with a book,” the author said in an interview with Italian media.
