We left Diego Maradona in November 2020. But his spirit is still very much alive in Naples, where he lit up football with his talent from 1984 to 1992. This Monday, a few hours after a meeting against Napoli, Roma coach Jose Mourinho wanted to pay tribute to the Argentine legend. The Portuguese coach went to the city’s Spanish Quarter, where there is a large mural representing the number 10. Accompanied by the security forces, Jose Mourinho spent a few seconds contemplating the mural, before coming to lay a large wreath at his feet.
Then the fans of Naples present immediately praised this technician. Mourinho and Maradona met on several occasions and they established a true friendship. When the Argentine passed away in 2020, Mourinho told BT Sport: “What I will miss the most is the phone call he made to me after every defeat. He didn’t call me after the wins because he knew I didn’t need to. But in the tough times, he was always there.” After the defeats he told me: Don’t forget that you are the best.
Jose Mourinho hopes his players will shine against Napoli on Monday evening, in a crucial match for the Champions League race. Roma, the fifth with 57 points, competes in front of the third place in the Italian Serie A, which currently has 66 points. The Romans are also still in the running in the European League Conference. They will face Leicester in the semi-finals on April 28 and May 5.
