French President Emmanuel Macron announced, on Friday, that he will meet with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa next week on the Medcat gas pipeline project.

Madrid and Lisbon are trying to lift Paris’ reservations with the aim of relaunching this project in the face of the energy crisis in Europe linked to the conflict in Ukraine.

The MidCat (Midi-Catalonia) project was launched in 2013, which was to connect the northern city of Barcelona with Barbera, in Aude, in 2019, and was considered too expensive and harmful to the environment, but Madrid and Berlin did not give up. on its construction.

Emmanuel Macron declared during a press conference after the European meeting that “the goal we must strive for, and I say this here very clearly, is to go to the end of the opening of the Iberian Peninsula in terms of gas, hydrogen and electricity.” Prague summit.
