More than a thousand people left Lebanon on flights booked by Canada

(Ottawa) Global Affairs Canada said it has helped more than 1,000 travelers leave Lebanon as the conflict intensifies between Israel and the Lebanon-based Hezbollah militant group.

The ministry says that a flight was opened for Canadians in Lebanon on Saturday carrying 126 passengers, and another on Sunday carried 139 passengers outside the country.

The department continues to urge Canadians to flee Lebanon and says it offered flights last week to more than 5,000 Canadians, permanent residents and their immediate family members who have expressed an interest in leaving.

She says the passengers she has helped include Canadians, permanent residents and their immediate family members, as well as citizens from countries such as the United States, Argentina, Australia and others.

According to the ministry, more than 25,000 Canadians were registered in Lebanon as of Sunday, but Foreign Minister Mélanie Jolie said about 45,000 Canadians may be in the country.

The Ministry says that commercial flights are still available to various destinations, and will depart in the coming days.
