Nearly 700 people have been killed in bombings in Chernigov, the regional center in northern Ukraine, near the Belarusian border, which has been bombed by Russian forces for weeks, the mayor of Chernigov said Friday.

“I can give an approximate number, 700 people. It is about the military and civilians,” said Mayor Vladislav Atrushenko, citing the independent Ukrainian Unian Agency.
According to him, between 80 thousand and 95 thousand people still live in this city located about 150 kilometers from the capital Kyiv, in which almost 300 thousand people lived before the start of the Russian invasion in late February.
The region’s governor, Vyacheslav Chaus, said in the morning that the first large convoy of humanitarian aid arrived in Chernigov on Thursday since the withdrawal of Russian forces from this region last week.
He called on the residents of the area to be vigilant in the face of the dangers of new Russian bombing.
“Planes and missiles continue to fly over our region,” he said on Telegram.
