(WASHINGTON) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted on Sunday that the United States remains his country’s “best ally”, despite the embarrassing leak of classified US documents including information on the Jewish state, the significance of which he played down.
One of the notes posted online said that leaders of the Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service, defended the demonstrations against the controversial reform of Israel’s judicial system, wanted by the government of Benjamin Netanyahu.
All this came as a result of a “misunderstanding,” as the prime minister confirmed during an interview with the American NBC channel.
He said that lower-ranking Mossad members “could take part in the protests,” but not the officials, which he said explains the content of the US document.
But Mr. Netanyahu stressed that the intelligence service did not oppose him, but on the contrary worked with him “hand in hand” in order to “ensure the security of the country.”
Since the reform draft was announced in early January, tens of thousands of Israelis have gathered each week to denounce the text.
And the government announced a pause in this reform at the end of March, until US President Joe Biden criticized it. He said he “hoped” that the Israeli authorities would abandon the project.
Blame that did not harm the relationship between the United States and Israel, according to Mr. Netanyahu.
“America is indispensable to Israel and by far its best ally,” he said.
