Two Centers for School Services (CSS) in Quebec have already announced they will be closed for the day of the solar eclipse that will occur on April 8. CSS scolaire du Fer and de l'Estuaire confirm that schools on the North Shore will be open.
It is known that one should not observe a solar eclipse directly as this may cause serious problems including partial or complete loss of vision. Therefore, for security reasons, some CSS schools in Quebec have made the decision to close their schools.
Richard Poirier said he received an email from the Department of Education at the beginning of the week from Public Health.
He said: “According to the information, the northern shore is not in the main path of the eclipse.” The region is expected to witness a partial eclipse. For this reason, no specific measures will be put in place for schools.
At CSS de l'Estuaire, educational activities will be prepared to monitor this event. They have been ordering glasses for months.
“One of the science teachers from Serge Bouchard High School will be providing workshops for teachers to prepare them to experience this event with their students,” says Patricia Lavoie, communications director at CSS de l'Estuaire.
Montérégie and Outaouais are the two areas that will be affected by the event.
Pay attention to your eyes
It should have adequate protection such as filter glasses specially designed for eclipse observing or a solar eclipse box. Simple sunglasses are not appropriate at all.
A solar eclipse, meaning the Moon completely covering the Sun, is a very rare phenomenon. According to the Canadian Space Agency, the last total eclipse seen in Quebec dates back to 1972.
