The authorities described the incident as a “fireworks war.”
Hundreds gathered as revelers began throwing fireworks at passersby as well as buildings in the city centre.
The clashes, which ended at about four in the morning, resulted in 10 wounded, according to CBS News.
Residents of the area described the place as a “war zone”.
“Car drivers were driving in all directions, getting into their cars and throwing fireworks everywhere. Sound bombs were found under the cars,” said Kevin Ringdale, a Minneapolis native.
Other residents compared the situation to a scene from the famous movie “Fast and Furious.”
“It quickly became a chaotic scene, with cars spinning at over 100 km/h in the middle of the city,” said Mike, who lives in the area.
The city of Minneapolis said it received 1,309,911 calls between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. This is equivalent to the number of calls for a typical day.
At a press conference, police explained the evening’s events as “absolutely irresponsible, dangerous and unacceptable”.
