The Wallonia-Brussels Consortium's vaccination program survey highlights data on HPV vaccination status among second year secondary school students in the last academic year. “The coverage rate for the first and second dose is 63.6% and 55.1% for girls, respectively, and 55.8% and 49.5% for boys,” ONE specifies. “These rates represent a lower bound because they do not include declarations of intent to vaccinate, nor the proportion of students for whom vaccination status could not be determined.”

HPV has different forms. It is a sexually transmitted disease that causes infections in the sexual organs and the anal area. It can also be responsible for infections in the mouth and pharynx. “Approximately 80% of the population is infected during their lifetime.”

Although the infection is often asymptomatic, in certain cases (about 10%) it can develop into cancer, especially cervical cancer in women and pharynx in humans.

The best way to protect yourself is vaccination. This is recommended for teens ages 13-14, both girls and boys. As part of the FWB vaccination programme, it is free.
