China summoned US Ambassador to Beijing Nicholas Burns on Tuesday to reprimand House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her “shocking” trip to Taiwan, state media reported.

Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng expressed his “strong protest” against Mr.I Pelosi visited the island, which Beijing considers part of its territory, during his meeting with Ambassador Nicholas Burns.
“This move is very appalling, and the consequences will be very severe,” Xie was quoted by Xinhua news agency as saying. “China will not remain passive.”
M’s journey.I Pelosi, the highest-ranking US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years, increased tension between the world’s two largest economies, with Beijing viewing the visit as a major provocation.
Mr Xie warned that the US would “pay for its mistakes” and urged Washington to “immediately correct its mistakes, and take practical measures to reverse the negative effects caused by Mr.I Pelosi in Taiwan.
MI Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Tuesday evening despite a string of warnings from Beijing.
The Chinese military said it was on “high alert” and “will launch a series of targeted military operations in response to the visit.”
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said more than 21 Chinese military aircraft entered the island’s air defense identification zone on Tuesday, an area larger than the island’s territorial airspace and intersecting part of China’s air defense zone.
There has been no official comment from Washington yet.
