Portable mammography machine

Every year in Quebec, an average of 7,000 new cases of breast cancer appear. Early detection can make a big difference. There will be a mobile mammogram unit in the Outaouais soon, while the lists are very long in the Outaouais.

The Clara Mobile Unit will be at Gatineau Hospital from next Tuesday until May 24. The goal is to reduce long waiting lists for screening.

You currently have to wait more than 30 weeks before getting an appointment in the region, according to the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation. Outaouais is currently the worst area in Quebec in terms of waiting. In comparison, in Montreal, we are talking about 2 to 6 weeks or 2 to 4 weeks in Gaspésy.

There are 8,500 people waiting for a mammogram, according to CISSSO. This is largely due to a shortage of medical imaging technicians and population explosion. CISSSO estimates that the passage of the mobile unit will allow the addition of 400 appointments. 350 of them have already been donated.

About 6,900 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in Quebec in 2022. Sadly, 1,350 of them died. The increase in screening is therefore good news for the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation, especially since diagnoses are increasing in all age groups.
