(Ecofin Agency) – Portugal maintains cooperation with Portuguese-speaking African countries on various topics, including telecommunications. This year, Portugal has already implemented cooperation projects with Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau and Sao Tome and Principe.
Portugal’s National Telecom Authority (ANACOM) has announced that it is collaborating with the multisectoral regulatory agency for the Cape Verdean economy (ARME) to help the latter improve its spectrum monitoring system. The two partners plan to install remote control stations with software developed by ANACOM on all the islands of the Cape Verde archipelago.

The first leg on the island of Boa Vista was commissioned on 13 July. It must enable the Cape Verdean regulator to Control spectrum on this island from its headquarters in Praia, without the need to move teams, which will reduce operating costs and increase efficiency levels significantly thanks to increased capacity and speed of work“.
This initiative is part of the cooperation protocol signed between ANACOM and ARME. The Cape Verdean regulator already uses the mobile network QoS measurement system, from the user’s point of view, which is used by ANACOM in Portugal.
The project could be part of a broader framework of cooperation activity for the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP). In addition to Cape Verde, ANACOM has already carried out similar cooperation actions this year with Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau and Sao Tome and Principe.
Improved monitoring of the radio spectrum in particular should enable ARME to manage and optimize the use of communication frequencies in Cape Verde, thus avoiding interference between different communication services. Moreover, well-managed spectrum can facilitate the introduction of new technologies, such as 5G, and ensure high-quality services for the entire population.
