Prevalence of the tiger mosquito in specific areas: recommendations from the Algerian Pasteur Institute

With the arrival of summer, mosquito bites appear. If they are, for the most part, benign, then the tiger mosquito, an insect native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, is more than feared. In order to control its spread, the Algerian Pasteur Institute calls for everyone’s participation.

In order to combat areas favorable to tiger mosquito breeding, it is necessary for citizens to act responsibly “, indicated the Algerian Pasteur Institute, through a press release posted on its Facebook page.

And reaffirming in his statement his firm intention to cooperate with the competent authorities in combating the tiger mosquito, by referring all the collected information to the authorities responsible for monitoring and managing this pest.

“This cooperation is necessary to put in place targeted and effective measures aimed at reducing the presence of tiger mosquitoes and protecting the population,” the statement continued. The Pasteur Institute therefore advocates the adoption of simple measures, such as eliminating places where water can stagnate, small debris, and old tyres.

It is also recommended to remove the saucers from the bottom of the flower pots or replace the water with wet sand and to ensure the proper flow of rainwater and waste water by cleaning the gutters and downspouts regularly.

He also recommends covering water tanks, such as cisterns or basins, with mosquito netting or a light cloth. And for homes with unused pools, the Pasteur Institute recommends emptying the water from the tanks or treating it with bleach or chlorine tablets.

Regarding the reproduction of adult mosquitoes, the Algerian Pasteur Institute advises pruning of grass and tall shrubs.

He also recommends picking up fallen fruits and plant debris and maintaining gardens properly. Another recommendation, but not the least: the Pasteur Institute calls for tiger mosquitoes to be reported.

And for this, nothing could be simpler. All you have to do is send the necessary information for the report via the institute’s Facebook and Instagram pages, which is the first and last name of the advertiser, the full address and the name of the city concerned, and attach a photo of the captured mosquito. The sting, in order to allow identification by the entomologists of the Institut Pasteur in Algiers as well as a photo of the bite.
