Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. In Canada alone, it is estimated that 30,500 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, which is a staggering number!
Although breast cancer has a high survival rate, it can leave psychological and physical scars in patients. Some women choose reconstructive 3D dermapigmentation of the areola to restore an aspect of their femininity after undergoing a mastectomy or reconstructive surgery (breast reconstruction).
To discuss and learn more, we went to meet Genevieve Grenier, founder of Bar à Beauté, an expert in permanent makeup, including reconstructive skin pigmentation.
Genevieve, can you explain a little about 3D areola reconstructive dermal pigmentation?
“Of course! My work consists of tattooing the areola and nipples as symmetrically as possible, trompe l'oeil, using a 3D effect, and playing with light and shadow. I ensure that the areola and nipple are symmetrical by coordinating the diameter and color while respecting the client's wishes as well as the shape of her breast. In my opinion, it is the stage The last stage of physical reconstruction after breast cancer, and certainly one of the most important stages.
Since she was very young, Genevieve Grenier, founder of Bar à Beauté, has loved caring for others and connecting with people. She, who loved accompanying her mother to care for her sick neighbor, still carries this desire for care. An intensive care nurse, after a few years she decided to choose her family life and put an end to the busy days in the hospital environment.
She became involved in the cosmetic medical field and found a job that combined her two passions: beauty and her concern for the well-being of others. When she was given the opportunity to train in permanent makeup, she felt perfect because she was passionate about drawing and art!
“The important thing for me is to give back to women who desire this, which is an essential aspect of their femininity. I hope, in my own way, to help them reaffirm their beauty and highlight their healing process. This is an important step for many breast cancer survivors to reconnect with their bodies.” “- Genevieve Grenier
The Beauty Bar owner no longer counts her training hours because she has loved perfecting her art for 10 years. Eyebrows, lips, eyes, what she loves is seeing her clients regain their self-confidence!
What prompted you to perfect your 3D areola tattoo skills?
It is the desire to help and support women who have or have had cancer. It ties in with my passion for hyper-realistic drawing, as I've been drawing portraits since I was 12 years old! It was natural for me to transfer my drawing knowledge to the level of permanent tattoos.
Additionally, I love creating human connection, have a lot of empathy and am a good listener. It is important for me to comfort the person, which is not always easy when our body is exposed to trauma and difficulties.
What are the concerns of clients who come to consult you?
The concerns are mainly at the result level, but when they review my website or Beauty Bar's social networks, they can see the result and the realism of the permanent makeup I create.
In total, the work is carried out in one sitting with an additional appointment for final touches. Clients who have beaten cancer can also ask me for my eyebrow expertise since the majority of women with cancer have lost all of their eyebrows or, at the very least, have had their eyebrows become thinner and less full as a result of their treatments. I can draw eyebrow hair one hair at a time or with a powder effect. If a client also wants to recreate the lash look by drawing a thin line of eyeliner on the eyelid, I'm here for her.
How does the first consultation take place?
I go at the client's pace. If she wants to meet me for the first time after getting medical approval, to discuss her needs, or if she immediately wants a diagram or demo, I'm there! There is no such client. However, the client must be between 12 and 18 months old after reconstructive surgery, in order to avoid complications. If she no longer has any hair, she can bring in photos taken before she got sick.
For reconstructive skin or eyebrow pigmentation, I of course have to take many measures to make them as even and harmonious as possible. Then we start! For circles, the result lasts from 2 to 5 years, and from 1 to 5 years for eyebrows, depending on your skin type. Next, we make the finishing touches!
Can women get breast tattoos for reasons other than cancer?
Indeed, some people consult me to camouflage postoperative scars after breast reduction or enlargement. Some people want to correct or recolor the asymmetry of the areola after aging or childbirth. Restorative skin pigmentation brings the client enormous satisfaction thanks to the amazing and above all very natural result. It's very rewarding!”
Whether for one reason or another, dear reader, do not hesitate to request a free consultation from Geneviève du Bar à Beauté. You will be able to meet your expectations. Restorative skin pigmentation can significantly help improve your perception of your body and improve your self-esteem, in an atmosphere of kindness and gentleness.
