(Moscow) The Russian authorities said in the early hours of Friday morning that the Russian air defense destroyed a Ukrainian drone in Moscow, causing no injuries or damage, amid the escalation of such attacks targeting the capital.
“Last night, during an attempt to reach Moscow, the air defense forces destroyed a drone. The corpse of the drone fell in the area of \u200b\u200bthe exhibition center and did not cause significant damage to the building,” said Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.
The elected official added that the capital’s emergency services are at the scene, and according to preliminary information, no injuries have been identified.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the attack was carried out from Kiev at 4 am local time (9 pm ET) and targeted “objects located in Moscow and the Moscow region”.
“A partial collapse of the outer wall was found in one of the pavilions of the exhibition centre,” the Russian news agency TASS reported, quoting emergency services.
According to TASS, the airspace near Moscow’s Vnukovo International Airport was closed and departures and arrivals there were delayed.
Drone attacks within Russian territory have been increasing for several weeks, often without causing damage or casualties, targeting the Russian capital in particular.
The Russian military announced on August 11 that it had destroyed a Ukrainian drone in a wooded area west of Moscow.
At the end of July and beginning of August, bombs were detonated over the business district of Moscow, west of the Russian capital, causing minor damage to the facade of two towers. In May, two drones were shot down over the Kremlin.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed at the end of July that “a war is coming to the Russian lands.”
