Saudi Arabia: A player bought for 30 million euros and was sent off after only six matches?

Portuguese striker Jota was bought for €30m this summer by Al-Ittihad and could be sent off after playing just six matches for the Saudi club.

Casting error? Jota, 24, was bought for €30m this summer at Glasgow Celtic and may not last forever at the Etihad. And while the Portuguese striker has only played six matches in his new colours, the Saudi club is already looking to get rid of him, according to media in the Gulf country. If some people enjoy saying that the Saudi team got the wrong ‘Jota’, thinking they were signing Liverpool’s Diogo Jota, then the captains will actually be disappointed with his performance since his signing.

No goals scored

Unlike Karim Benzema, the winger seems to be having a hard time adjusting to his new surroundings. In six matches, in all competitions combined, Jota has yet to score a single goal or provide an assist when the French striker is more lively with three goals and two assists in as many matches. These disappointing performances could precipitate his departure a few weeks after his arrival.

Especially since he occupies a place as a player from outside the community, and these places are limited to eight in each squad in the Saudi Professional League. Al-Ittihad, which dreams of including Mohamed Salah, may be tempted to abandon it to attract the Egyptian striker. For his part, Jota may have to look for a new club. But with 28 goals scored in his last two seasons with Celtic, he shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a buyer.
